Chikkabanavara Lake is a lake at a distance of 1.5 km to the north of the Chikkabanavara Railway Station. It is between Chikkabanavara and Kereguddadahalli village, between Latitude 130 08’N and a longitude of 770 50’E. The lake gets accessible by Hesaraghatta Road from the eighth mile on the highway NH4.
According to Bangalore Development Authority records, the total extent of the lake is over 105 acres and 15 Guntas. The lake is outside the BBMP area coming, which is under the care of BDA North. The lake gets water from rainfall, having a catchment near hills due to the structure of the land.
The runoff water reaches the lake from all sides of the lake. The lake is a naturally formed watershed with an area of 170 acres, and it is now reduced to 105 acres. Several city folks who had farms in the nearby village remember that this lake was around 700 meters from the railway line.
The violation over the lake gets gauged from the fact that it gets pushed 1.5 km away from the railway line. In the past years, the surrounding villages used this lake water for agriculture, irrigation, and fishing purposes. The lake water was even used for drinking and cooking by people nearby. The water got used for washing clothes by the cleaners from the surrounding area in the western part of the lake.
The lake now submerges the road connecting the nearby village and became non existed for two decades. The reasons for the nonexistence of the road are the increase in the volume of water in the lake and the lack of planning to upgradation the waste weir of the lake.
