St. Mary's Basilica, Bengaluru

St. Mary's Basilica is the oldest church and the only church to have a minor basilica built in 1882 in Bangalore. It gets known for the celebrations it hosts each year in September during the St. Mary's Feast. The impressive front, windows, and Mother Mary statues make it an amazing sight.

St. Mary's Basilica's History

The church has experienced significant growth over its history. It got founded by Catholic priest Fr. Jean Dubois as a modest chapel in the town, then known as "Bili Akki Palli" in 1811. At that time, the church was the "Chapel of Kanikkai Madha." After the church expanded in 1813, it had to be rebuilt between 1856 and 1882 since the communal disturbances of the 1830s devastated it.

Bishop Marie Coadou then planned the new St Mary's Basilica building over the ensuing years, and it was the official title of "Minor Basilica" in 1973.

The parish had a horrific epidemic in the 1800s, and the locals turned to Mother Mary for help preventing the spread of the horrible pandemic. According to legend, the Holy Virgin Mother heard the villagers' cries, and the plague quickly left the community.

When some gangs of miscreants attempted to burn down and loot the church, they attacked the little statue of Mother Mary at the shrine near the main door. But the statue was not harmed and got unaffected by the flames. Furthermore, the attackers got blind when they attempted to pull it down.

Annual St. Mary's Feast

The Shivajinagar Bus Terminus, which has excellent connections to the rest of the city, is s very close to St. Mary's Basilica. Cubbon Park is the closest Metro Station to the location, 1.5 km away. You can take the bus route to get there and then take a taxi to get to the Basilica.
