Ulsoor Lake

Ulsoor Lake is in the city's northeast and is close to M.G. Road. The Lake is one of the known attractions and was built by Kempe Gowda II. Sir Lewin Bentham Bowring, the commissioner, built the lovely body of water. The Lake is one of the large lakes and one of the city's oldest lakes. It is over an area of 1.5 km square, covered in deep forest. It has two springs that are heavily silted up.

The Lake continues to be a favorite among visitors looking to spend some peaceful time in the calming beauty of nature. It was once a favorite relaxation area of the Mysore Wadiyars. According to certain traditions, Wadiyars threw a fish into this Lake with a diamond nose ring.

It was known as Halsur Lake or Alasur Lake, but it is now one of the key locations for the Ganesha Festival. The Lake is unsuitable for swimming now, but you can go boating at the Lake. There is a boat club here that provides visitors with delightful boating experiences. The Gurudwara is another tourist destination that is close to the Lake.

Take a seat, stroll around the park, and take a few pictures of the rare birds that live here. Boating is one of the liked activities in Ulsoor Lake. Every year, around August or September, the Lake is a key location for Ganesh Chaturthi celebrations.

Ulsoor Lake's history

According to a local tradition, King Kempe Gowda built the Lake in the second century. The Lake was called the "Halsur" or "Alasur" Lake. But Sir Lewin Bentham Bowring, the Commissioner of Bangalore, built the Lake today during his tenure in office. Numerous restoration attempts have been conducted to restore the Lake.

• aerating wastewater that is discharged into the Lake
• improving parks and swimming pools
• desilting the lake bed
• installing silt traps at the mouth of stormwater inlets

Things to do at Ulsoor Lake

BoatingThe Lake is the best place for short boating because it’s about a 3-kilometer radius. There is also a boating club here, and you may rent a pedal or rowboat to go on a trip around Ulsoor Lake's waters. You can stop at any islands in this area to view the Lake from various points.

Strolling

You can use the path that circles the Lake for a morning or evening stroll. Intriguingly, Ulsoor Lake is connected to a fascinating historical myth. The region where the current Lake is is said to have formerly been covered in a dense forest. The Vijayanagar Empire's Kempe Gowda was passing across the area one fine day when he fell asleep.

He sought refuge beneath a tree, the same tree Mandava Rishi used to worship God, Someswara. He had a dream where the Lord revealed a secret treasure to him. When he awoke from his nap, he discovered the treasure and used the money to construct the Someswara Pagoda. He accidentally produced Ulsoor Lake in the process.

Getting to Ulsoor Lake

Ulsoor Lake may be accessible by a variety of public transit alternatives due to its central location. From MG Road, you may take an auto-rickshaw or take the metro. Ulsoor Road, M. G. Road, and Ulsoor Lake stops are accessible by bus from the Lake.
